In October 2023, Ivan Franko National University of Lviv launched the international project AI4CyberSec – Development of Joint Master Programme ‘Artificial Intelligence for Cybersecurity’, which received funding under the Erasmus+ programme (ERASMUS-EDU-2023-EMJM-DESIGN).

The aim of the project is to create an innovative joint EQF 7 level master’s programme that combines the latest scientific achievements in the field of artificial intelligence and modern educational methods for training cybersecurity specialists. The project takes into account labour market needs, industry standards and the challenges facing Europe and the world as a result of COVID-19, the war in Ukraine and global digitalisation.

Why is this important?

In today’s world, cybersecurity specialists face an unprecedented number of threats, ranging from cyberattacks by state-sponsored hacker groups to digital attacks on critical infrastructure. In particular, since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, hundreds of cyberattacks targeting Ukraine have been recorded, often accompanied by physical strikes.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated security issues associated with the transition to remote working, leading to an increase in data leakage risks. At the same time, new challenges have emerged, including psychological burnout among IT workers due to excessive workloads in hybrid working environments.

How can artificial intelligence help?

Research confirms the effectiveness of AI in threat detection, malware analysis and automated incident response. However, implementing such solutions requires highly skilled professionals, who are in high demand. According to research, even before the pandemic, there was a global shortage of more than 4 million cybersecurity professionals.

Project objectives

Key stages of project implementation include:

  • analysis of international, national and industry standards in the field of security;
  • development of a model for cooperation between universities;
  • identification of key competencies and learning outcomes for the master’s programme;

creating a programme curriculum and mutual recognition policy for learning outcomes;

signing inter-university agreements;

developing a strategy for promoting and attracting students.

The project also involves the active participation of IT company representatives in shaping the educational content, assessing the relevance of learning objectives and developing future employment policies for graduates.

Strategic significance

The project aims at digital transformation, sustainable development and support for global economic recovery through human capital development. It creates conditions for intercultural dialogue, exchange of experience and involvement of universities from third countries in the European higher education area.
